Here are some practical tips to use Google Meet:
- Can be used to take students through a lesson.
- Practice using this tool with a colleague before using it with students. It will take you between 15-30 minutes to learn the features of this tool.
It is best to not use the video feature (i.e. turn off background video)
It is a norm not use video but rather screen share when working one-to-one with students
Use audio with screen sharing.
If you must use the video feature, wear professional attire and ensure there is nothing personal in the background.
There are very limited capabilities when using Google Meet on the phone, but participants are able to view the lesson clearly.
If you are sharing your screen, students will be able to see you scrolling through to get documents. Some tips:
Make sure you have the documents up and ready to view before you share your screen.
Pull the window you want to share to be separate from that on which you are conducting the Google Meeting. Then, when you share your screen, choose to only share that separate window.
Ask students to turn off their audio if they are not talking. This will minimize audio “feedback”.
Come up with a way for students to let you know they want to speak, answer, or ask a question. You could use the chat feature within the video conference to help with this.
